I was gaffing a instructional video for a new drug Watson Pharmaceuticals released for cancer patients. One of our actors found an old arri mag in the studio at cinema world. The AC is probably still kicking himself for loosing that mag from a shoot 10 years ago.
If Sony were to take the EX1 and turn it into a film camera, I would imagine it would look something like this.
I gaffed 2 days on a musical trailer for a feature film titled, “Welcome To Harlem”. The crew was a lot of fun to work with. 2 red cameras and wide lenses can kind of back you in a corner with lights but we got it done and the footage looked nice. The feature sounds a great project to be a part of.
I gaffed a music video for NYC hardcore band Madball last night. The shoot was pretty cool. Shot on Canon 7d and Sony ex3. The video was done in several live performance scenes with a giant mosh pit of fans. The shoot was a little bit last minute for the band and they pulled together a fairly large crowd for the video.
I was at Hand Held films doing a equipment check-in today. They had just got their Alexa cameras back from a shoot and I got a little demo on it. I must say this camera is built the right way. The most amazing part that I found was the boot time was something like 14 seconds. On the RED you are forced to wait at least 90 seconds to boot the camera, which is a major pain between switching batteries without a swap pack.
This camera is an AC’s dream, especially with the LCD display on the side. Quick and easily you can switch your ISO, Frame rate, Shutter, and color temperature. The functions we really care about are right there to be tweaked in a few seconds. No long pull down menu’s to deal with anymore. It is a true professional 4k cinema camera. Although the over cranking on the SxS cards is still problematic, I was told they are working to fix this. The camera is a little on the heavy side, especially with the anton hytron 140. But a heavy camera isn’t always a bad thing.
Got thrown a curve ball and was asked to DP on a film for NYU’s graduate program. It was a great time. I wish that I could shoot more film. The new vision 3 stocks are incredible and the 14 stop dynamic range is mind blowing. Such a crisp image that no digital camera can match. Steve Sterling did an amazing job doing a 3 min long-take on the dolly. We gave the shot 2 takes and both were absolutely beautiful moves on the dolly.
Worked grip side on a short film in New Jersey with DP Nathan Levine-Heaney. It was a fun time, the crew was solid and we made our days. Helped rig a sweet home made process trailer that worked out pretty well.
I am eagerly awaiting the new Panasonic af-100 to release. I have been excited about this camera for a few months now following its press releases. Its a pretty amazing camera for the price and I am excited to pick one up in January. Say goodbye DSLR problems!
